Sign it's high time for a manicure: when a bag lady on the bus recommends you use cuticle cream. Thanks for the advice, lady!

Seriously, I just made an appointment. Why not pretty myself up on my 27th birthday? I've already put on my birthday skirt, the same black lacy skirt I've been wearing for like eight years in a row now. I still fit in it, and for that I am thankful. Hopefully I can say the same thing on my 30th. And my 50th. Ha. Later we are gathering with some friends and my dad at Suppenkuche down the street. I got the back room reserved for us and I'm looking forward to the revelry- namely, having a beer served to me in a giant glass boot and the finest schnitzel and spaetzle in San Francisco. Or should I say Sanfrooklyn....

I'm hopeful about this new year for me but truthfully right now I must say I'm a tad bummed. A fantastic job I was very close to getting fell through yesterday (why didn't I take Arabic in college instead of Spanish? WHY?) and our week down south ended with coming home and discovering puddles of red goo pooled on the kitchen floor. At first I thought someone (our disgruntled super?) stuffed a head in the fridge while we were gone.

But it was just some frozen raspberries in the freezer that had melted out...along with a freezer full of Trader Joe's booty bought just the other week. Tossing all that stuff was painful, I tell you. Our fridge probably broke down right around the time we left for our trip so there was plenty of time for everything to get really gross in there. After cleaning up the putrid crime scene, I had the pleasure of sorting through a half dozen letters from a bank I've never patronized regarding a new account and credit card in my name! I can't fathom why someone is going through all this trouble- my credit is surely worse than theirs. But still, it's MY bad credit and MY good name they're trying to tarnish. What a pain in the ass.

But the trip down south, I nearly forgot...Even though LA is geographically so close it's really worlds away... I had a good time though connecting with family, friends, and spending time with Rafe away from home. After some time in the Valley, we had a few days to ourselves in the quaint town of Ojai at a meditation retreat. And on the way home, we stopped by Santa Barbara and had a magical time. Not only did we ride along the waterfront in a surrey (I've been dying to do these for YEARS), I stumbled upon a fantastic antique store that was closing that very day wherein everything was being sold for ONE DOLLAR. I cannot tell you how exciting this was.Tomorrow I'll post some photos... because now that I am in my late 20s I can't remember much of what happened anymore without visual cues.

The Task at Hand

Ok, I know this is San Francisco and I'm talking about Craiglist here not the back pages of the Economist, so how can I really be surprised to come across the occasional weird job posting? Here are two of the more bizarre ones I've come across lately:

ZUNI CAFÉ seeks experienced Full-time oyster shucker.

Email resume in the body of your email - do not send attachments.
Please put OYSTER SHUCKER in your subject line.

It would be one thing if it they offered to train you, but you have to come with EXPERIENCE? I'm dying to see the resumes of people applying for this job. Do they have subheadings like "Shucking Experience" or "Oyster-related Jobs"? I suppose shucking full-time would be very labor-intensive and would require a certain kind of personality...but, dang, how disheartening to think I'm not even qualified to shuck oysters. But, wait, here's a job I'm totally qualified for:

Kink.com is currently seeking a highly skilled Production Assistant.

Job Objective:
Assists key personnel during shoots, take photographs and edit shoots

Essential Job Requirements:
1. Provides general assistance to Directors and Videographers
2. Responsible for setting up shoot as needed
3. Responsible for timely set breakdown
4. Sterilize all supplies according to Standard Operating Procedures
5. Return and cleaning of all wardrobe items
6. Take still photographs during each shoot
7. Edits footage as needed
8. Logging in Footage
9. Driving models to and from airport as needed
10. Second PA/Armory Driver as assigned
11. Must be comfortable being on camera as a Production Assistant
12. Other duties as assigned

Numbers 1-3 and 6-12, fine. Numbers 4 and 5? Sterilize all supplies? I consider myself to be an open-minded person and I'm willing to get my hands dirty to get a job done...but I draw the line at that kind of dirty. And what does "highly skilled' imply? And, while my curiosity is indeed piqued, I don't think I actually want to know what "other duties" entail either.

Whoa, I almost missed number 11! Shouldn't that kind of requirement be rewarded with a bonus of some sort?
