Nature for What Ails Ya

So over the weekend we headed out with some pals in search of Nature and ended up a few hours later in a rented raft floating down the American River. In this way, California beats New York. During one particularly sad and bizarre stretch in my life, I literally did not leave the island of Manhattan for 8 months. New York has this way of just sucking you in and convincing you that you don't ever really need to leave. But here I've found that people appreciate being outdoors more, and it's just plain easier to do so. You can jet out of town with no set plan and be immersed in real live Nature shortly thereafter. I really have come to appreciate this. We warmed ourselves in the hot sun, we swam in the frigid water, we dived off a bridge, we rowed our raft, we ate deli sandwiches, and we witnessed Nature's bountiful cuteness in the form of a mother duck and her ducklings. It was kind of a perfect day, topped off with melted Nutella-covered brownies at the end. And lots of Tecate in between.

Can you see the ducklings?

Rafe may look less than enthused to be here, but it's only because his sunglasses are masking his excitement. I, on the other hand, could not find my sunglasses and I burned my retinas. But at least you can tell I'm happy.

Our day of raftin' almost didn't happen as when we arrived at our destination we realized that, oops, we were a week early for raftin' season. But Rafe found the one guy in the entire Central Valley willing to rent us something, anything, on which to float. And lo, the day was saved. Rafe is now to be called "Raft" or, his personal preference, "Rif Raftin' Rafe."

More photos of the day....
